Founded in 2008 by Jenie Skoy and Reid Parham, Foodlore Library aims to expand the awareness of food history, food traditions and the act of eating as a way of building and sustaining community on this planet.
We want to collect and share food stories that might otherwise go lost unless we tell them.
We envision a world where people:
- Understand what foodways have been lost, replaced and/or changed.
- Know where their food comes from and can tell stories of its origin.
- Eat healthy, sustainable and culturally-meaningful food not because of political persuasion but to pursue a more ethical and moral life.
- Become grounded again by eating around the dinner table with their families and when possible, eating food they've harvested themselves.
- Recognize that freedom from hunger is one of the most fundamental human rights, and as such, societies, communities and families do all they can to protect that freedom.
- Learn that a globalized food economy brings options but not the only options.
- Help keep businesses accountable for the integrity of their food products so we can trust what the label says.
- Understand ecology not because being "green" is trendy but because it impacts our health, longevity and happiness as human beings.
- Make more lasting connections between the health of the landscape and their own health.
- Rediscover the fun and celebration inherent in the ritual of eating.
